Parrot AR Drone Very First Hands-on Review!
The package: The box contains the AR Drone, outside and inside bodies, a 1000 MaH LiPo battery as well as 12v charger, plugs for several country electric outlets, plus a target.
About the Inside flight: That’s where the Parrot AR Drone excels. Touch a single button, and the propellers spin up, then adjust into high-speed to get a smooth and stable pull off. It then moves at around three feet, expecting more instructions. In newbie mode (right button), you are able to turn and go up and down. In the pilot mode (left button), you’ll be able to fly forwards and back and right and left. Mix the 2, and you essentially have full control.
The optical flow placement hold is best suited on a distinctive floor, as a patterned carpet or tiled ground. On a entirely featureless ground (cement or clean, unpatterned floor covering) it might tend to float a little. Total flight time is below ten mins in my experience.
While you fly around furniture, the ultrasonic elevation hold will get confused. Often it rises while you fly over a sofa and often it falls. Often it will get so confused the AR Drone would go to the ceiling. But in general, it is doing a quite fine job.
Open-air flight: This is simply not the AR Drone most effective suit. For starters, it won’t fly over 15 feet (because of the range of the ultrasonic sensor I guess). Furthermore, the position hold actually only functions when there is zero wind. When the wind picks up, the AR Drone starts to lean and rattles, and also the optical flow camera seems to lose the lock. Oftentimes this means it really drifts, in other cases it’s going to scoot off in a random direction after having a wind strong gust.
Though when there is no wind, you are able to fly as far as the wifi connection will allow you to. We have successfully tested around one hundred feet.
Dono Johnson greatly loves Rc flying as a leisure activity, because of that the AR Drone is like a dream coming true! If you are intrigued you can also check out this AR Drone video review here and see it in action!
