Installing A Car FM Modulator Is A Waste Of Time
For people with an older vehicle, it is very common to be unable to listen to an MP3 player because of the lack of proper audio inputs. To fix this problem many people turn to a car FM modulator or an FM transmitter. It’s important to understand the differences between the two products.
Installation is often critical to determining the performance of any piece of technology. A car FM modulator requires extensive installation that if done incorrectly could cause serious damage to your vehicle. An FM transmitter, however, does not need to be installed – so there is no chance of potential damage to your car.
The following are the steps to installing a car FM modulator:
1. You must carefully take apart the dash (some cars more, some cars less) of the vehicle and remove the stock stereo.
2. Carefully taking apart the original wiring.
3. The modulator is plugged into the stereo and the wire from the car’s antenna is plugged into the modulator.
4. Stripping the wire of the modulator that supplies it power and splicing it together with the proper wire from the vehicle.
5. Selecting the correct place to attach the grounding wire from the modulator to the vehicle.
6. You’ll need to create a place where you want the audio cable from the modulator to come out from and connect to your MP3 player (possibly making a hole in the dash).
7. Attaching all the wires from the car stereo back into the correct place so that everything works correctly.
8. You’ll need to reassemble the dash.
Whether you do this on your own or have a professional do it, you will be spending extra time and money on the installation. Imagine spending the better part of a Saturday getting your modulator installed, only to find out a few days later that it is not working properly. If you are planning to sell your car in the future, it may be unwise to install something as permanent as a car modulator.
Now let’s look at the installation of an FM transmitter:
1. Connect your audio source – iPod, smartphone, computer, etc. – to the transmitter via the 3.5 mm audio cable.
2. Turn on the transmitter using batteries, USB, wall adapter or cigarette lighter.
You can now broadcast your personal music over any FM radio. An FM transmitter is extremely easy to use and incredibly versatile. You can easily move it from vehicle to vehicle, as well as using it in your home, backyard or office.
Quality FM transmitters can broadcast audio for up to 150 feet. The importance of this is that transmitters with a large transmission distance will produce clear sounding audio. Cheap transmitters can usually only broadcast a few feet, which makes for very static filled audio.
A car FM modulator has no performance advantages over a quality FM transmitter. A transmitter will also give you many more options as far as how you use it, which makes it a smarter overall purchase.
